How Long Do Dermal Fillers Last?

You’ve done your research, maybe booked a consultation, and now you’re wondering whether the results will actually stick around long enough to be worth it. It’s one of the most common questions we hear at VitaGrace Aesthetics – and for good reason.

Most dermal fillers last anywhere from 6 to 24 months, depending on the type of filler used, where it’s placed, and how your body processes it. Some fillers in low-movement areas can even last up to 2 years or beyond. So yes, the investment holds up, but there’s a lot more to the story that’s worth understanding before you sit in the chair.

Why “It Depends” Is Actually a Useful Answer

We know – nobody loves that phrase. But when it comes to filler longevity, the variables genuinely matter, and knowing them helps you set realistic expectations and plan smarter.

Here’s what actually determines how long your results last:

  • The type of filler. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers like Juvederm and Restylane are the most popular and typically last 6-18 months. Calcium hydroxylapatite fillers (such as Radiesse) typically last 12-18 months. Poly-L-lactic acid (like Sculptra) works differently – it stimulates collagen over time and can last up to two years or more.

  • Where it’s placed. Areas with more movement – like the lips – break down filler faster than areas with less activity, like the under-eye hollows or cheeks.

  • Your metabolism. People with faster metabolisms tend to process filler more quickly. It’s not a flaw – it’s just biology.

  • Your lifestyle. High-intensity exercise, sun exposure, smoking, and stress can all accelerate the rate at which your body absorbs filler.

  • Your injector’s technique. The depth of injection, the amount used, and the specific product chosen all influence how long results last and how natural they look over time.

A Closer Look at the Most Common Fillers

Not all fillers are created equal, and each one has a different “job.” Here’s a practical breakdown:

Hyaluronic Acid Fillers (6-18 months)

These are the workhorses of the aesthetic world. HA fillers are made from a substance your body already produces naturally, which is why they integrate so smoothly and look so natural. They’re ideal for lips, nasolabial folds, cheeks, and under-eye areas. One bonus: they’re reversible. If you ever want to adjust or dissolve results, an enzyme called hyaluronidase can safely break them down.

Calcium Hydroxylapatite – Radiesse (12-18 months)

This filler does double duty. It fills volume immediately and stimulates your body’s own collagen production over time. It’s commonly used for deeper facial lines, jawline definition, and hand rejuvenation. Because it’s denser, it’s better suited for structural work than for delicate areas like lips.

Poly-L-Lactic Acid – Sculptra (Up to 2+ years)

Sculptra isn’t a traditional filler – it’s a biostimulator. Instead of filling volume on the spot, it triggers your skin to produce collagen gradually over several months. You’ll typically need 2-3 sessions spaced about a month apart, and the results build slowly. The payoff? A more natural-looking, longer-lasting outcome that improves skin texture overall, not just volume.

The Lips vs. Cheeks Reality Check

If you’ve had lip filler before, you probably noticed the results seemed to fade faster than you expected. That’s completely normal, and there’s a straightforward reason for it.

Your lips are in near-constant motion. Talking, eating, drinking, smiling – all of it accelerates how quickly your body metabolizes the filler. Most people find that lip filler lasts 6-12 months, sometimes less for very active lips or those with a faster metabolism.

Cheek filler, on the other hand, sits in an area with far less movement. It also tends to be injected more deeply into the facial structure. That combination means cheek filler routinely lasts 12-18 months, sometimes longer with the right product and technique.

The takeaway: set your expectations based on where you’re getting treated, not just what you’ve heard generally about fillers.

How to Make Your Results Last Longer

While you can’t fully control how your body processes filler, you can definitely influence it. A few habits that genuinely help:

  • Wear SPF daily. UV exposure breaks down both collagen and hyaluronic acid. Protecting your skin protects your investment.

  • Stay hydrated. HA fillers attract and hold water, so good hydration helps them perform at their best.

  • Avoid extreme heat – saunas, steam rooms, and intense sun can increase filler breakdown in the early weeks post-treatment.

  • Don’t skip your follow-up. Maintenance appointments (often called “top-ups”) done before the filler fully dissolves tend to require less product and keep results looking seamless.

  • Choose a skilled injector. Technique matters enormously. Proper placement in the right tissue plane helps filler last longer and look better.

When Results Start to Fade – What Actually Happens

Here’s something that surprises a lot of people: filler doesn’t just “disappear” one day. It fades gradually, and most people notice it slowly over weeks or months rather than all at once. Volume softens, lines begin to return, or the lifted appearance becomes more subtle.

This gradual fade is actually a good thing. It gives you time to plan your next appointment without feeling like you’ve gone from “refreshed” to “back to square one” overnight. Many clients build a maintenance rhythm – scheduling touch-ups every 9-12 months – that keeps their results consistent without requiring dramatic amounts of product each time.

It’s also worth knowing that with repeated treatments over time, some people find their results last longer. Regular collagen stimulation and the cumulative effect of maintenance treatments can mean your skin holds onto results better than it did in your first session.

A Note on “Permanent” Fillers

You may have come across fillers marketed as permanent or semi-permanent. At VitaGrace Aesthetics, we don’t offer these, and there’s a reason for that. Permanent fillers carry significantly higher risks, including granulomas, migration, and complications that are extremely difficult (sometimes impossible) to correct. The temporary nature of HA and other dissolvable fillers isn’t a downside. It’s a safety feature. It means your face can change with you, and any adjustments can be made along the way.
